Optimism

I think of myself as a pretty optimistic person. I'm not blind to reality or naïve about dark truths. I just prefer to have a positive outlook about life - even the negative things. Life sucks sometimes. But it doesn't suck all the time. Things always get better - in one way or another. Maybe not as quick as we'd like, but they do get better. If I keep this in mind during one of life's sucky moments, it really helps me stay positive and optimistic.

A Few Quotes About Optimism:

"You'll never find a rainbow if you're looking down."
- Charlie Chaplin

"Choose to be optimistic, it feels better."
- Dalai Lama XIV

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
- Dr. Seuss

"Things are always better in the morning."
- Harper Lee

"We'll never survive!"
"Nonsense.  You're only saying that because no one ever has."
- William Goldman (The Princess Bride)

  1. I struggled with being optimistic as a younger person. Age has changed my mind, however I'm mostly a realist. It is what it is.

    1. This is a saying that is spoken a lot at work. I feel the same way. I think that realism is a sort of optimism. It's accepting things the way the are - being okay with what life throws at us. Not giving in, not losing ourselves, learning from our mistakes, accepting - these are such positive characteristics!

  2. Like Teresa, I struggled as a younger person with optimism. My second husband and age have brought me to a more optimistic outlook coupled with the realism Teresa speaks to. As she says, "it is what it is."

  3. I like Dr. Suess's quote.

Perpetually negative people are draining. It can be hard to rise above that.

On the other hand, sometimes I think the most 'positive' thing you can do for someone who is suffering in some way is to wrap your arms around them and let them know they're not going through it alone. Adequate words can be hard to find in such cases, anyway.

I think it's a balance - being allowed to acknowledge and express when things aren't going well with being able to see and also express the joys in this life that also are part of our existence.

    Great post!

    1. I love the word "balance" - it helps with so many things in life. I agree that self-disclosure can be so helpful when helping someone through a tough time. Thanks, Wendy.
